In classic Finnish culture, the sauna was once considered a sacred space, so it was common to scrub benches, walls, and floors regularly, often using natural cleaning agents like warm water mixed with vinegar.

Wooden benches and walls absorb sweat and moisture, so allowing the sauna to dry out completely after each use is essential to prevent mold and preserve the wood’s scent and color. And while the heat helps keep many bacteria at bay, it’s still recommended to lightly sand the benches every few years to refresh the wood and remove stains. Even the stones on the sauna stove need occasional attention: they’re checked and replaced if cracked, to keep the heat even and gentle.
